In most utility districts in California, CitiGreen can offer straight paybacks on a complete turnkey solar system in three years or less. That is if you have an adequate tax bill to absorb the tax incentives and have the cash or qualify for a loan. The money you would otherwise spend on taxes and your electricity bill is what is used to pay off your new solar system.
Some of the municipal utility districts do not have electric rates that are complimentary to solar, and paybacks in those districts can go as high as 4 years. With PG&E, we are seeing paybacks in as little as 2.5 years. There is still a rebate from SCE that can get quick paybacks as well. In Hawaii and Guam, paybacks are even faster. In Hawai’i, the tax incentives are 104% of the system cost if you are a Hawai’ian resident.
